Minds Matter Seattle | Minds Matter Across America
Victor Zamora first learned about Minds Matter through the students. At the time, Victor was living in Denver and working in the college access field, where he was consistently impressed by the quality of the Minds Matter students he met at his school. When MindsMatter Seattle—Victor’s hometown—was searching for their first-ever Executive Director, he realized this was the opportunity for him.
What excited Victor most about becoming Minds Matter Seattle’s first-ever Executive Director was the powerful sense of community that undergirded the whole program. “I can say that I know every student in the program,” Victor said, “and every student in the program knows me and can approach me about anything.” For Minds Matter Seattle, community and connection are the essential bedrock of the organization and the reason for the program’s tremendous success.
The pandemic, of course, deeply affected the Minds Matter community. Coming back in person two years ago, Victor reorganized the first session as a day-long exercise in community-building—ice-breakers, games, and intentional moments of connection and community for students and volunteers. In Victor’s own words, “the energy was infectious.” The event proved so successful it has now become an essential MindsMatter tradition that kicks off every program year.
May was Minds Matter Seattle’s ten-year anniversary! The organization hosted a special gala on May 17 to celebrate a decade’s worth of volunteer dedication and student success.
Congratulations to Seattle’s volunteer corps, their students, Board of Directors, and staff for ten years of excellence!
