New York City - Volunteer Opportunities

Minds Matter of NYC is looking for volunteers!

Are you looking for…

1. A fun volunteer opportunity that will enrich your life as well as someone else's
2. Opportunities to meet and network with other young professionals in NYC
3. Invaluable leadership and team skills

Minds Matter is a 17 year old not-for-profit organization that helps top academically performing high school students in the inner city reach their dreams of getting into college. Average student GPA is about 3.6 (on a 4.0 scale) while the students' average family income is about $20,000.

Our volunteers are young professionals and graduate students who play a critical role in helping these Minds Matter students achieve their goals.

Available Opportunities

Mentors Time Commitment: 3-4hrs/week, September through May
We pair 2 mentors with each student to work for 2 hours every Saturday alongside other mentor/mentee pairs on essays, summer prep program selection, and school selection. Mentors are required to be college graduates, attend at least 3 Saturday sessions a month, and undergo a background check. Our weekly sessions are structured and we also have a lot of fun mentor/mentee outings and volunteer-only get-togethers throughout the year, giving ample opportunity to get to know your mentee as well as other volunteers.

Test Prep Volunteers Time Commitment: 2-4hrs/week, October through May
We train our Test Prep Volunteers to take students through a structured weekly Princeton Review curriculum that helps elevate their PSAT and SAT scores. In October, Test Prep volunteers undergo 4-5 2hr training sessions. Volunteers guide students through a structured Princeton review program for 2hrs every Saturday from November through May for SAT volunteers and from February through May for PSAT volunteers.

Writing & Critical Thinking Volunteers Time Commitment: 4-10hrs/week, October through May
Typical Writing and Critical Thinking Volunteers have a professional or academic (undergraduate or above) focus in writing. Each volunteer is grouped with three students in a structured program to help take the students' writing skills from the basic to the intermediate and advanced level. In addition to meeting with students for 2hrs each Saturday, these volunteers also review weekly essay assignments and participate in the review of summer program and college applications.
